Random Table: Coriolis – The Great Dark | 6 magazines at Ship City
Coriolis – The Great Dark is the brand-new sequel or spin-off (depending on how you choose to view it) of Coriolis – The Third Horizon. The main settlement of humanity is located in a remote part of space known as the Lost Horizon, called Ship City. It is a colony built inside a meteorite that has had almost two hundred years to grow and develop its own culture.
In this context, magazines and similar publications have also been created. To help you describe the world of Ship City more colourfully, I have come up with six publications that PCs can find by chance, buy, or that tell them more about the NPCs who own them.
Enjoy reading!
The Random Table
| D6 | The magazine |
|---|---|
| 1 | Delicious Lentil The selection of ingredients on Ship City is limited, that’s an undeniable fact. But people are inventive, not least when it comes to their recipes. This magazine has made it its mission to share these recipes with the people, working together with all the cooks on the station. Contrary to what the name suggests, it’s not just about lentils, of course. It is published every six segments and, thanks to its ever-topical subject matter, is one of the longest-running formats on Ship City, having been in existence for 158 years. Special editions are published from time to time when the Gardeners Guild makes new spices available to the public or something else expands the menu. |
| 2 | Son of the Dar This series of graphic novels tells the exciting adventures of the young heir Farouk, who wants to avenge the death of his father, a Dar of Darbaran, and reclaim his inheritance. He is assisted by Jasra, an agent of the Colonial Office, and Kamal, a neophyte from Zylos (sic!), with whom he is caught in a thrilling forbidden love triangle. The depiction of the Old Horizon is… imaginative. Although it is officially frowned upon by the Coriolites, a lot of copies seem to be going to them and are particularly popular with younger readers. The booklets are in their sixth issue and are trying everything to print enough copies to meet demand. |
| 3 | The Latrine It is one of the most scathing satirical publications Ship City has ever seen. Its main target of ridicule and criticism are the guilds and their mistakes. In fact, it seems to contain numerous internal details, suggesting that it has informants within the guild leadership who are critical of them. Of course, there are numerous rumours about who is behind the publication. Coriolite circles are the main ‘suspects’, but the Black Toad and even the Fourth Directorate are also frequently mentioned. However, as the publication has appeared irregularly over the years, some people assume that it is actually just a name behind which various individuals and groups are hiding. |
| 4 | In Her Eye’s This publication is more of a collection of eyewitness accounts from people who claim to have seen the Lady of a Thousand Eyes, paired with wild prophecies and something that may be intended to represent prayers. If the pages were not the same size and neatly bound, one would not recognise them as belonging together. Although described as extremely disturbing, the booklets are considered artistically valuable due to their collage-like style and are therefore in high demand. The print run is unknown and may not even be in the hundreds. It is noteworthy that only issues 2 and 3 are known to exist. Issue 1, if it exists, is one of the most sought-after contemporary documents. |
| 5 | Fashion Fancies and Follys Unsurprisingly, fashion on Ship City is significantly more consistent than it is said to have been in Old Horizon. This only leads to those who consider themselves vanguards of this art form trying all the more urgently to make their mark. This magazine is precisely one such attempt. Editor and main author Aida Mahmoodi from the Machinists Guild attempts to combine her own designs with the small trends she discovers in the corridors of Ship City. Her own creations are heavily inspired by the ruins of the Builders and explicitly attempt to distance themselves from Old Horizon. So far, after two issues, success has been rather modest, but it is finding a certain fashionable influence in the Explorers Guild. |
| 6 | Exploration Now It is one of many magazines dedicated to the expeditions of the Greatships and the Explorers Guild. Reports, background information, interviews: the full spectrum of areas of interest is covered. However, it struggles with the same problems that all similar publications face. At some point, all exclusive sources are exhausted and only the stories that are generally circulating remain. Editor Toufik Amjad solves this by embellishing the stories a little more freely, and he is not the only one to do so. But this is not sustainable in the long run if the magazine is to survive. Therefore, the announcement that someone will be on the upcoming Greatship to report exclusively is not surprising, but it is viewed with scepticism. |
Pop culture at the edge of space
I hope you like the entries. They fit in with the image I have (so far) of the game world, and perhaps they can also enrich your Ship City. Or another game world, with a few minor changes.
